Week 7 | Day 2
Fatherly Advice
Exodus 18:1-27
Exodus 18:1–27 takes place shortly after Israel’s deliverance and early wilderness victories, when Moses’ father-in-law Jethro visited the camp and observed Moses attempting to lead the entire nation alone. From morning until evening, Moses listened to disputes and rendered judgments for the people, leaving him exhausted and the people worn out. Though Moses was faithfully serving, Jethro recognized that this leadership model was unsustainable and lovingly confronted him with wisdom rooted in both experience and reverence for God.
The significance of this passage is its emphasis on God-honoring delegation and shared leadership. Jethro counseled Moses to appoint capable, God-fearing leaders over groups of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, allowing Moses to focus on prayer, teaching, and guiding the people. This structure protected Moses from burnout, served the people more effectively, and revealed that God values order, accountability, and community leadership. Faithful leadership isn’t doing everything alone—it’s empowering others to serve under God’s authority for His mission and purpose.

Application
Invite Wise Counsel into Your Daily Decisions
Seek input from godly people who can speak truth with love and clarity. Don’t just seek counsel. Make sure the counsel is Godly and capable in the areas you need guidance. Don’t seek financial counsel from a poor, beggar.
Evaluate Where You may be Carrying Too Much Alone
Identify responsibilities that should be shared or delegated. What is it that you have to do verses what can others do for you.
Develop and Empower Others to Lead
Invest in people and trust them with meaningful responsibility. While there is a vetting process to clarify and build trust, it requires intentionality to delegate and divest oneself into others.
Establish Healthy Boundaries for Work and Service
Protect your energy and focus so faithfulness can endure over time. There will always be someone in need. Yet while you must engage, you can’t successfully engage everyone and every need. You have to work through others.
Trust God with Outcomes When You Once Release Control
Delegation is an act of faith that God is at work beyond me. On most occasions, the persons that you delegate to will do it better and more effectively than you would have done it.

Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for reminding me that Your work is bigger than my ability and not dependent on my doing everything myself. Give me humility to receive counsel, wisdom to delegate well, and faith to trust You with what I release. Help me lead and serve in a way that honors You and sustains the people You’ve called me to walk with. Amen.
