THE EIGHTH PLAGUE: LOCUST

Exodus 10:1-20

In Exodus 10:1–20, the Lord announces the eighth plague—locusts—and explained why
Pharaoh’s resistance had been allowed to continue: so God’s power would be displayed and remembered by future generations. Moses warns Pharaoh that if he refuses to release Israel, locusts will devour whatever the hail left behind. Even Pharaoh’s own officials pled with him to relent, admitting that Egypt was already ruined. Yet instead, Pharaoh tried to negotiate obedience, offering to let only the men go. Moses refused the compromise, insisting that worship required the entire community. When Pharaoh hardened his heart, locusts swarmed the land, stripping Egypt bare.

This plague is significant because it completed the collapse of Egypt’s economy and exposed the emptiness of Pharaoh’s repentance. When the devastation became unbearable, Pharaoh confessed his sin and begged for relief—but once God removed the locusts, Pharaoh hardened again. The moment revealed a sobering truth: regret over consequences isn’t the same as repentance, and partial obedience is still disobedience. Through it all, God’s purpose remained clear—not mere devastation, but revelation—so that all would know that He alone is the Lord.

Application

The Lord is God, and He will be known. God’s actions are meant to reveal who He is, not
simply to display power.

2. God’s warnings are mercy. Ignoring His word only multiplies loss; responding early
brings protection.

3. Partial obedience is still disobedience. God doesn’t negotiate surrender—true worship
involves the whole life.

4. Sin ultimately destroys what we’re trying to protect. Pharaoh’s grip for control
accelerates Egypt’s collapse.

5. Relief without repentance hardens the heart. Temporary sorrow must give way to lasting
change.

6. Build a legacy of remembering, not repeating. Your response to God today shapes the
story told to the next generation.

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your patience and Your relentless pursuit of my heart. Forgive me for the times I ignore Your voice and choose a way that seems right to me. Teach me to recognize when You are warning me in mercy, and give me the humility to respond with full obedience. Guard me from half-surrender and shallow repentance. Thank You for never giving up on me and for desiring to be known in my life and through my life. Amen.
