THE FOURTH PLAGUE: FLIES

Exodus 8:20-32

In Exodus 8:20–32, God sends swarms of flies across Egypt after Pharaoh again refuses to
release Israel. For the first time, the Lord clearly distinguishes between Egypt and His people,
sparing the land of Goshen so Pharaoh will know that God is present and sovereign “in the midst of the land.” The plague overwhelms Egypt impacting everyone and everything including Pharaoh’s palace, exposes Pharaoh as powerless, and leading to another round of half-hearted promises. Though God mercifully removes the flies at Moses’ prayer, Pharaoh hardens his heart once more—showing that relief without repentance changes circumstances, but not hearts.

Application

1. Examine where you may be offering God partial obedience instead of full surrender.

2. Trust that God knows how to protect and preserve His people even in the middle of chaos.

3. Take “small” compromises seriously before they multiply and begin to dominate your life.

4. Let God’s mercy and relief lead you to lasting repentance, not temporary resolve.

5. Remember that God is not distant—He is present and at work right where you are.

Closing Prayer

Lord, open my eyes to see where I have been negotiating instead of obeying. Guard my heart from small compromises that quietly grow into bigger struggles. Thank You for being present in the midst of my circumstances and for knowing how to protect and guide Your people. When You bring relief, let it lead me to repentance, gratitude, and deeper trust in You. I choose Your way today. Amen.
