TIME TO THROW DOWN

Exodus 7:8-13

Moses and Aaron weren’t young men chasing a new adventure—at 80 and 83, they were walking into a most intimidating situation because God told them to go. With Pharaoh demanding proof of their calling, Aaron threw down his staff and it became a serpent. It was a jaw-dropping moment… until Egypt’s magicians followed suit. For a split second, it looked like evil could “match” what God had done; but then Aaron’s serpent swallowed theirs. God wasn’t merely competing—He was overruling. Nonetheless, Pharaoh stayed indifferent, his heart unimpressed by God’s power and truth. This is often how obedience can feel. God promises His presence, but we still must choose courage. We must speak the hard word, take the faithful step, and trust God when the opposition looks impressive. The enemy can imitate and intimidate—but he can’t prevail over God.

Application

1. Obedience Always Requires Courage—even with God’s Promises

God told Moses and Aaron He would be with them, but they still had to walk into Pharaoh’s
court and deliver a message they knew would be rejected.

2. Trust is in God is Only Proven by Doing What God Says

Moses and Aaron didn’t negotiate their assignment—they acted. Real trust doesn’t just believe God is able; it moves forward because God has spoken.

3. Don’t Ask for God’s Help While Refusing His Guidance

It’s inconsistent to want God “with us” while we’re unwilling to follow Him. His presence is
promised to His purposes—and peace is found on the path of obedience.

4. When Evil Seems to Match God, Don’t Panic—Wait and Watch

The magicians’ serpents looked convincing for a moment, but they couldn’t stand in the end. There are moments when the world seems powerful and darkness feels loud—but God’s truth will win.

5. Age is Never an Excuse for Unfaithfulness—Faith is Always in Season

Moses and Aaron remind us that no one is ever too old to obey or too young to trust. Often, the longer we live, the more tempted we are to rely on ourselves. Today, exercise childlike trust.

Closing Prayer

Lord, give me the courage to trust You at all times and to step into obedience when You call me into action for Your purposes. Help me not to become shaken when the world seems to match what You have done, but to wait upon You—confident that You are sovereign, greater than all.

Keep me from growing indifferent by making my heart tender, my faith active, and my
obedience steady. Use me today—publicly and privately—so Your will is achieved in and
through my life. Amen.
