Week 1 | Day 1
OPPRESSION DEPRESSION
Exodus 1:1-22
When Joseph’s generation passed, a new Pharaoh—ignorant of Joseph—saw Israel’s growth as a threat. He enslaved them and ordered the death of Hebrew boys. Many Israelites had grown “Egyptianized,” comfortable in a culture not their own, yet God had not abandoned them. In the darkest decree, two midwives—Shiphrah and Puah—feared God more than Pharaoh and quietly disobeyed evil. God honored their holy courage and continued His work, unseen but unstoppable.
Application
1. God’s Presence Will Never be Canceled by Pressure
Even when culture seduces or rulers oppress, God remains at work in and through His people.
2. Fear Fuels Control; Reverence Fuels Courage
Human fear manipulates, but the fear of the Lord strengthens ordinary people to do the right thing.
3. Suffering Doesn’t Signal God’s Absence
Hard things can happen to God’s people; they often become the soil where faith deepens and spiritual stamina grows.
4. Honor God Above All
It is better to risk loss with a clear conscience than to gain safety by disobeying God—He honors those who honor Him.

Practice Today
- Seek before you stew—Name your circumstance, then choose to trust and obey God one step at a time.
- Turn toward God, not away—When trouble hits, move God-ward in prayer and Scripture, not inward in panic.
- Protect life and truth—Like the midwives, guard the vulnerable and refuse participation in
Closing Prayer
Lord, as I watch You lead Israel from bondage to promise, give me eyes to see, ears to hear, and a willing heart to learn. When fear shouts, teach me to revere You more than man. In hardship, keep me from despair; build spiritual muscle and steady trust. Help me honor You with quiet, concrete obedience for Your glory and my good. In Jesus’ name, amen.
