THE EXAMPLE OF JESUS

Philippians 2:5-11

The self-emptying of Jesus is one of the great theologies of the Bible. It serves as one of the clearest and most powerful pictures of Christ’s humility and glory. Jesus, though fully God, didn’t cling to His divine privileges but willingly emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant and entering human life. His humility wasn’t weakness but deliberate obedience to the Father’s will. He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. Through His self-giving sacrifice, Jesus demonstrated the true nature of love and leadership.

Yet the story doesn’t end in humility alone. Because of Jesus’ obedience, God exalted Him and gave Him the name above every name. One day every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. This passage shows that the path of humility leads to God’s honor. For believers, Christ’s example becomes both our model and our motivation. Following Jesus means adopting His mindset—serving others, surrendering pride, and trusting God to lift us up in His time.

Application

Adopt the Mindset of Christ

Jesus willingly humbled Himself to seek and save the lost. He did for us what we couldn’t do for ourselves—He paid a debt He didn’t know for the forgiveness of sin. A Christlike mind prioritizes service over status.

Embrace Humility as Strength

Christ’s humility was a powerful expression of obedience to the Father and love for God’s creation. Choosing humility reflects trust in God’s purposes and plan.

Serve Others Sacrificially

Jesus modeled love through self-giving action teaching us that life is relational not transactional—that is, we do what we do to serve others to help them instead of manipulating them to help ourselves. True leadership lifts others rather than exalting self.

Worship Christ as Lord

The ultimate response to His sacrifice is surrender—and surrender is our highest form of worship (Romans 12:1). Every life finds meaning when it bends a knee and bows their heart before Him.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for the example of Jesus who humbled Himself in perfect obedience. Help me adopt His mindset and live with humility, love, and servant-hearted devotion. Teach me to trust You with my future and seek to honor Christ in all I do. May my life reflect the glory of the One who is Lord of all. In Jesus’ name, amen.
