JESUS IN MY MARRIAGE

Ephesians 5:21-33

A Christian marriage is far more than a social contract—it is a living picture of the gospel. The passage begins with the call to “be subject to one another in the awe of Christ,” reminding us that humility and reverence for Jesus shape every relationship in our lives. From that foundation, wives are called to align themselves under their husbands’ leadership to enable them to walk beside them in loving encouragement—while husbands are commanded to love their wives with sacrificial, agape love that is only possible through Christ in us living through us. Each of these commands require the spouses to walk first with Jesus on a daily basis so that they are enabled to walk in agreement and alignment with each other fulfilling their God-given calling to one another. This means that left to human strength, these commands are impossible. A husband can’t love with Christlike sacrifice, and a wife can’t trust and follow with grace, apart from the transforming work of the Spirit. But when both partners follow Jesus, their marriage becomes a testimony of redemption and an witness to the mission of the church. The husband reflects Christ’s self-giving love, and the wife reflects the church’s trusting response. Together, they portray the beauty of the gospel in everyday life.

Application

Begin with Reverent Submission to Jesus

Healthy marriages flow from shared devotion to Jesus. When both partners honor Jesus first, their relationship gains direction and sustenance enabling each spouse to care and minister to the other.

Understand that Leadership Requires Sacrifice

A husband’s call to love mirrors Christ’s self-giving love. He is to lay down His life to his wife and Jesus laid down His life for him. True marital leadership protects, nurtures, and serves his bride.

Practice Trusting Partnership

Biblical alignment reflects confidence in God’s design. Respect and trust cultivate relational harmony recognizing that God has given both the wife and husband specific roles and responsibilities to help the marriage and family to work together for our good and His glory.

Prioritize Spiritual Unity

Marriages thrive when both partners pursue Christ together. Shared faith strengthens shared purpose which breeds a God-honoring, missional relationship.

Let Your Marriage Display the Gospel

A healthy, God-pursuing relationship between husband and wife should point others to Christ and His church. Everyday love between believing spouses should become a living testimony of God’s grace.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for the gift of marriage and the picture of the gospel it provides. Help husbands love sacrificially as Christ loves the church, and help wives walk in trusting partnership that honors You. Fill marriages with humility, grace, and the power of Your Spirit. May every Christian home reflect the beauty of Christ’s love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
