THE SPIRIT-LED LIFE

Ephesians 4:17-5:16

In Ephesians 4:17–5:1, Paul contrasted two ways of living—the old life (flesh) shaped by spiritual blindness and the new life shaped by the Holy Spirit’s transforming work. The former is marked by futility of mind, a hardened heart, and conduct driven by self-indulgence. But believers have “learned Christ” differently. Conversion isn’t merely adopting new behavior; it’s being renewed in the spirit of the mind. The Spirit-filled life begins internally, reshaping thinking so that outward conduct reflects new identity. It is Christ in you living through you.

This transformation begins with the volitional decision to put off the old self and put on the new that is created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. This is both a work of the Spirit and an act of the will. It’s an intentional, daily exchange—truth for falsehood, kindness for bitterness, forgiveness for resentment in response to the revelation of God. The Spirit leads us into integrity, compassion, and unity that enables us to imitate God as beloved children. Thus, the Spirit-filled life isn’t about religious appearance but about reflecting the character of our Father in our everyday relationships.

Application

Reject the Patterns of the Old Life

Spiritual maturity requires conscious separation from former habits. We can’t wear the old self and the new at the same time. This requires our daily pursuit of God and the things of God.

Renew Your Mind Continually

Transformation begins with reshaping our thinking. This involves engaging God’s Word and seeking God in worship by inviting the Spirit to align our thoughts with God’s truth.

Practice Intentional Replacement

To put off falsehood and put on truth is to replace the attitudes, ambitions, and actions of the flesh with grace, gifts, and gratitude of the Spirit.

Reflect Your Identity as a Child of God

We are called to imitate our Father. This is only possible when our character flows from belonging to Him and seeking first His kingdom and righteousness.

Guard the Unity of the Spirit

Harboring resentment towards others grieves the Spirit. As such, we must seek to walk in kindness with others to strengthen our faith community and our witness to the world around us.

Closing Prayer

Father, renew my mind and lead me by Your Spirit. Help me put off old patterns and put on the character of Christ. Teach me to reflect Your love, forgiveness, and holiness in my daily life. Guard my heart from bitterness and shape me into a faithful imitator of You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
