FREEDOM IN CHRIST
Galatians 5:1-15
In Galatians 5:1–15, Paul issues both a declaration and a warning: “It was for freedom that Christ set us free.” The gospel liberates believers from the burden of earning righteousness through the Law. But this freedom must be guarded. To accept circumcision—or any requirement—as necessary for justification is to place oneself back under obligation to keep the entire Law and to be “severed from Christ.” Grace and law cannot function as co-saviors. The moment we rely on performance for acceptance, we step away from the sufficiency of Christ.
Yet freedom is not license. Paul clarifies that liberty in Christ is not an opportunity for the flesh but an invitation to love. “Through love serve one another.” The whole Law finds fulfillment in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” True gospel freedom does not produce selfish independence but Spirit-enabled service. Legalism produces pride or despair; grace produces humility and love.

Application
Stand Firm in Gospel Freedom
In salvation, Jesus set us free from striving to earn God’s favor and from the bondage of sin. So, now we have the ability to not return to systems that measure worth by performance or the pursuit of personal gratification.
Reject Any Addition to Grace
Adding requirements to Christ’s finished work on the cross undermines His sufficiency. Trust in Him fully, not partially. If salvation can be obtained through any of means other than the cross, then Jesus died for nothing.
Use Your Freedom in Christ as a Means to Love
Freedom in Christ isn’t self-centered autonomy – it is a call to love God will all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength that empowers joyful service and love toward others.
Let Love Guide Your Conduct
Love fulfills what the Law demanded but could not produce. Spirit-led love reflects the heart of God.
Guard Against Relational Harm
Paul warns that biting and devouring one another destroys community. Gospel freedom should build unity, not fracture it.

Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the freedom Christ secured for me. Help me stand firm in grace and refuse any return to legalism. Teach me to use my freedom not for selfish gain but for loving service. Shape my life so that love fulfills what the Law required, and may my relationships reflect the unity You desire. In Jesus’ name, amen.
