THE PROMISE OF FAITH
Galatians 3:23–4:7
Paul continues this discussion on faith in Law by unfolding the stunning transition from bondage under the Law to sonship through faith in Christ. Before faith came, we were “kept in custody under the law,” like minors under a guardian. The Law served as a tutor—restraining, instructing, and exposing sin—but it was never meant to be permanent. With the coming of Christ, the era of supervision gave way to the reality of relationship. “For you are all sons of God through faith in Jesus.” The gospel doesn’t merely improve our standing; it changes our identity.
So Paul moves from illustration to intimacy. In “the fullness of time,” God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, to redeem those under the Law so that they might receive adoption as sons. This is significant. Redemption secures adoption; adoption secures justification, and justification leads to relationship. Because we are adopted sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” securing our identity and salvation. Thus, Christianity isn’t some cold legal compliance but warm familial communion. We’re no longer slaves striving for acceptance—we’re sons and daughters living from acceptance.

Application
Remember the Purpose of the Law
The Law was a guardian, not a savior. It prepared us for Christ but was never meant to replace Him. Thus, human effort is irrelevant to grace because grace is a gift to be received and not something that can be earned.
Embrace Your New Identity in Christ
Through faith, we’re not merely forgiven—we are adopted. Live from the security of sonship, not the anxiety of servanthood. Our salvation and identity are secure in Christ, kept by the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
Trust God’s Perfect Timing
Christ came in the “fullness of time,” not a moment too early or late. God’s redemptive plan and purposes unfolded with precision, even when unseen.
Cultivate Intimacy with Your Heavenly Father
The Spirit within us cries, “Abba,” a term of closeness and trust. Teaching us that prayer isn’t a performance to appease God, but the natural expression of belonging and communing with God.
Refuse to Return to Spiritual Slavery
Legalism pulls us back into fear and striving. Grace calls us forward into freedom and relationship. As we will see in Galatians 5 – it was for freedom that Christ set us free…

Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for sending Your Son in the fullness of time to redeem and adopt me. Help me live not as a slave to fear or performance, but as a beloved child secure in Your grace. Teach me to walk in the freedom Christ purchased and to draw near to You with confidence and trust. May the Spirit continually remind me that I am Yours. In Jesus’ name, amen.
