Freedom Week 2 | Day 2

In Galatians 3:15–22, Paul used a human covenant to illustrate a divine truth, explaining that once a binding agreement is ratified, it can’t be altered or annulled. Back in Genesis, centuries before the Law was given, God made a promise to Abraham and to his seed—which is anyone who puts their faith in God.  430 years later, God issued the Law to the Israelite, yet this Law didn’t replace or revise this promise, although it did frame it and expose humanity’s sinful nature and need. It also reveals that our inheritance of salvation rests on God’s gracious commitment, not human compliance. If righteousness could come through the Law, then the promise would be unnecessary—but God anchored redemption in grace from the beginning all the way to the cross.

So why the Law? Paul explained that it was added “because of transgressions” until the promised Seed (Jesus) would come. Thus, the intent of the Law was to expose sin; not eliminate it. It functions like a mirror, revealing guilt but offering no power to cleanse. So, the Scripture has revealed that only the faith in the cross can fulfill where the Law falls short in providing grace. The Law highlights our need; the promise (Jesus) supplies our rescue. Redemption has always been grounded in God’s faithfulness, not man’s performance.

Rest in the Unchanging Promise of God

Your salvation is rooted in a covenant God initiated and served. What He promises, He never revokes.

Understand the Purpose of the Law

The Law reveals sin and exposes our inability to save ourselves. It drives us toward the cross of Christ rather than toward self-effort.

Resist the Temptation to Mix Grace and Merit

If inheritance depended on law-keeping, it would no longer rest on promise. Grace loses its meaning the moment performance becomes the foundation. While grace produces spiritual response, effort never produces grace.

Let Conviction Lead You to Christ, not to Despair

When Scripture exposes sin, it isn’t to crush hope but to direct faith. The awareness of guilt prepares the heart to receive grace, and then it propels us into active service to God in appreciation for what He’s done for us.

Trust in Christ as the Fulfillment of God’s Redemptive Plan

The “Seed” promised to Abraham wasn’t an abstract idea but a person—Jesus. All of God’s promises find their “Yes” in Him.

Father, thank You that my salvation rests on Your promise and not my performance. Teach me to understand the Law rightly—as a revealer of sin and a guide that leads me to Christ. Keep me from drifting into self-reliance, and anchor my confidence in the finished work of Jesus. Strengthen my faith in Your unchanging covenant of grace. In His name, amen.
