GRACE VERSUS WORKS
Galatians 2:11-21
In Galatians 2:11–21, is the heart of this epistle. Here, Paul recounted a public confrontation with Peter in Antioch. Though Peter had previously enjoyed fellowship with Gentile believers, he withdrew from them when certain men from Jerusalem arrived, fearing criticism from the circumcision party. His actions, though subtle, compromised the truth of the gospel by suggesting that Gentiles were spiritually inferior unless they adopted Jewish customs. Paul recognized that this behavior could preach a false message just as loudly as words. When conduct contradicts grace, clarity is required.
So, Paul offered an amazing defense that centered on justification by faith. No one is justified by the works of the Law, but only through faith in the finished work of Jesus, or else the cross was useless. Likewise, no amount of religious observance can produce righteousness; it is received through trusting Christ alone. The crescendo of the passage comes in verse 20, when Paul explains the transaction of grace, stating that in salvation, a believer is crucified and resurrected with Christ, so that they no longer live, but Christ lives in them. Thus, the Christian life isn’t self-reformation but participation in Christ’s death and resurrection life, and to attempt to return to law as a means of righteousness is to nullify grace and empty the cross of its necessity.

Recognize that Your Actions Communicate Your Theology
Peter’s withdrawal sent a message that grace was insufficient. Our conduct should reinforce, not undermine, the gospel we profess.
Stand for Truth with Courage and Humility.
Paul confronted Peter not out of pride, but to protect the gospel. Faithfulness sometimes requires loving correction for the sake of clarity.
Rest in Justification by Faith Alone
We are declared righteous because of Christ’s finished work, not our religious performance. Freedom grows when we stop striving to earn what Christ has already secured.
Live from Your Union with Jesus
Being crucified with Christ means our old identity no longer defines us. Christ’s life in us becomes the source of daily strength and transformation.
Refuse to Rebuild What Grace has Torn Down
Returning to legalism after embracing grace diminishes the cross. When you rely on self-effort for acceptance, you subtly declare Christ’s sacrifice insufficient.

Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You that I am justified by faith and not by works of the Law. Keep my life aligned with the truth of the gospel so that my actions reflect Your grace. Teach me what it means to live crucified with Christ, dependent on His life within me. Guard me from legalism, pride, and fear of man, and anchor me in the sufficiency of the cross. In Jesus’ name, amen.
