Week 7 | Day 5
Altar-ed Behavior
Exodus 20:22-26
Immediately following the giving of the Ten Commandments, God gave His first instructions about worship. Having spoken from heaven with overwhelming power, God reminded Israel that He couldn’t be represented by images of silver or gold. Instead of elaborate structures or impressive artistry, God instructed the people to build simple altars made of earth or uncut stone, emphasizing humility and accessibility rather than display.
The significance of this passage is God’s clear concern for the heart behind worship. God stripped away anything that could have turned worship into performance, pride, or idolatry. By forbidding steps to the altar and ornate craftsmanship, God teaches that us (and them) worship isn’t about elevation, exposure, or human achievement, but about reverent approach and obedience. True worship focuses on God’s presence, not human presentation, and draws people toward humility rather than self-exaltation.

Application
Examine the Motives Behind Your Worship
Are you doing to honor God or to feel good about yourself? Are you doing it to seek God’s presence or for personal recognition?
Remove Anything that Distracts from Sincere Devotion to God
Simplify any practices that shift your focus away from God to anyone or anything else. Only God is to be the object of our affection.
Approach God with Humility rather than confidence in Form or Routine
Let reverence shape how you pray, sing, and obey Scripture. Seek the abiding life above all.
Submit Your Preferences to God’s Instructions
Allow Scripture, not culture or comfort, to define worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but transformed by the renewing of your mind through Scripture.
Remember that God’s Presence—not Presentation—Makes Worship Meaningful
Trust that God meets His people where hearts are surrendered. If God isn’t present, then you are worshipping something other than Him.

Closing Prayer
Holy God, forgive me for the times I focus more on form than faith, and appearance rather than obedience. Teach me to worship You with humility, sincerity, and reverence, honoring You for who You are rather than what I bring. Strip away pride, distraction, and self-focus, and draw my heart fully toward You. May my worship glorify You alone. Amen.
