Hope That Holds Us Steady

Romans 8:22-25

In Romans 8:22-25, Paul reminds us that creation itself groans in anticipation of redemption, and we too eagerly await the fullness of our salvation when Christ returns. While we have been redeemed by the finished work of Jesus, we live in a world still marred by sin, tragedy, and suffering. Yet, our hope is anchored in what Jesus has already done—His death, burial, and resurrection—and what He has promised to do—return and make all things new. This hope sustains us when life feels chaotic, and it gives us strength to keep walking faithfully, knowing that God has not abandoned us. Even when we can’t see how He is working, we trust that He is moving all things toward His good and glorious purpose.

Application

1. Anchor Your Hope in Christ Alone

Our hope is not built on circumstances or personal strength, but on Jesus’ finished work on the cross. As the old hymn declares, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.”

2. Live with Eager Expectation

The promise of Christ’s return gives us strength to persevere. We don’t just believe once; we keep on believing as His Spirit empowers us to walk through the trials of this world.

3. Trust God’s Sovereign Plan

Even when the world seems out of control, God is still on His throne. He has not abandoned us. The pain we see now is a reminder of our need for the cross and a promise that ultimate victory belongs to the Lord.

4. Be a Witness of Hope

In a dark and hurting world, let your faith shine brightly. Be a voice of peace, grace, and love, pointing others to the hope you have in Jesus.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for the hope I have in You—a hope built on Your death, burial, and resurrection, and sealed with the promise of Your return. When the world feels overwhelming and tragedy strikes, help me to lift my eyes to You and trust that You are still in control. Strengthen my faith so that I will not be swayed by what I see, but will walk confidently in what I know— that You are good, You are faithful, and You are coming again.
Until that day, help me to live as a witness of Your love and hope to a world in need. Amen.
