Week 4 | Day 5
Dead to Sin, Alive to God
Romans 6:5-10
Paul announces the miracle that occurs within the transaction of salvation that when we by faith are united with Jesus in His death and resurrection that God spiritually transforms our lives from death to life. Our old self—the sin-ruled nature inherited from the fall—was crucified with Christ so that sin’s dominion is broken; we are no longer its slaves but have been set free (see Galatians 5:1-13). Because Jesus died to sin once for all and now lives to God forever, we too have been raised to new life and belong to Him eternally with the new nature of the Holy Spirit who is a deposit guaranteeing our redemption (see Ephesians 1:13). This is the state of our salvation (justified, set apart to God, glory-secured). Still, day by day, we have to learn how to live out our salvation in the standing of this state while we await full and final transformation at His return (see 2 Corinthians 5:17).
Application
1. Remember the State of Your Relationship with God
In Christ you are a new creation—an heir of God, a child of the King. Your past no longer defines you—Jesus your Savior defines you as an heir and citizen of heaven (see Colossians 1:13-14).
2. Refuse Slavery
When temptation calls, answer with truth—I died with Christ; sin is not my master (see Romans 6:6–7). Instead, choose to align your flesh with who you are in Christ—and not in who you were.
3. Rely on God’s Resurrection Power
The key to overcoming the wiles of the demonic is learning that you can’t fight the flesh with the flesh. Instead, we have to lean into the life of Christ through the indwelling and filling of the Holy Spirit in the abiding life—seeking and obeying the promptings of the Spirit and taking the way of escape God provides.
4. Rehearse the God’s Truth Every Day
Preach the Gospel to your heart—I am dead to sin, and alive to God in Jesus. Let this identity shape your thoughts, words, and habits.
5. Reinforce Others by Investing God’s Truth in Them
Help others to grasp the difference between state (secure in Christ) and standing (still growing). Assurance fuels holiness; confusion fuels defeat.

Closing Prayer
Father, thank You that in Jesus my old self was crucified and that I have been raised to new life with Him. Thank You that sin no longer owns me and death has no claim over me. Today, teach me to live my standing from the settled state of my salvation—dead to sin and alive to You. Strengthen my will by Your Spirit, align my desires with Your heart, and use me to encourage others to walk in their new identity. In the name of Jesus, who died once for all and now lives to God forever, amen.
