Week 4 | Day 4

State and Standing

Romans 6:1-4

Romans 6:1–4 slams the door on the lie that grace excuses sin. Paul says— “By no means!” Thus, because of our union with Christ, we have been spiritually baptized (completely transformed) into His death, buried with Him, and raised to newness of life. As a result, the same power that raised Jesus from the dead now empowers us to enable us to have victory over sin, death, and the demonic—when we lived tapped into the power of God. This is our state (positional reality): rescued from darkness, declared righteous, set apart to God, citizens of heaven—and new creations. It also shapes our standing (our daily practice) —so that while secure in His grace, we have the calling to live responsibly in the power of the Holy Spirit to walk in surrendered obedience, choosing holiness instead of giving into the desires of the flesh. This requires our moment-by-moment leaning on the Holy Spirit rather than yielding to the appetites, ambitions, attitudes, and acts of the flesh. This should serve as a great reminder that grace is never a license to sin; but is the liberating power enabling us to say no to sin and yes to God in our daily lives.

Application

1. Remember the STATE of Your Salvation

Begin each day with the understanding that in Christ, you have died to sin and been raised to new life and that you stand righteous and secure before God and empowered to overcome the wiles of the devil and demonic.

2. Live Your STANDING

You are secure, so present yourself to God today—mind, body, habits—choosing what aligns with your new life rather than the old patterns. God has set you free from sin and alive to Him—live alive (see Galatians 5:1-13).

3. Reject the License to Sin and Embrace Your New Liberty in Christ

Grace doesn’t minimize sin—it masters it. To experience this victory requires your total dependence on the Holy Spirit to resist the appetites, ambitions, attitudes, and acts of the flesh.

4. Practice Your Spiritual Baptismal Identity

When tempted, preach your union with Christ to your heart—reminding yourself that you died with Jesus in His death and now you are a new person who now walks with Him.

5. Fight from Victory—Not for It

You are rescued, redeemed, reconciled, and restored—so battle daily temptations with resurrection power and confidence God has imbued to you through the Holy Spirit. The Christian life works only when we rely on the Holy Spirit—not self-reliance.

Closing Prayer

Father, keep me from taking Your grace for granted or using it to gratify my flesh. Create in me a clean heart and a willing spirit. In every moment of temptation, help me to desire Your righteousness more than sin—and your grace more than my gratification. Thank You that the power that raised Jesus from the dead, now lives in me. So, now, by Your Spirit, teach me to say no to sin and yes to You—walking as the new creation You have declared me to be. In Jesus’ name, amen.
